Today we´re going to talk about discolored whites: when white clothes lose their color and turn yellow or grayish, or simply when they´re not as white as when you bought them. This can happen with collared shirts, blouses, pants, and also with linens: table cloths, sheets, etc. To keep these articles white, it is essential to use detergent with bleach. It´s better if the detergent contains both optical and chemical bleach, because they complement each other.
Three things can cause discolored whites:
1) When very dirty clothes are washed with less dirty clothes, the detergent solution can become saturated with grime, which is then re-deposited in the clothes, usually in the whites that were originally less dirty.
2) When you use too much detergent and don´t rinse the clothes well. More soap doesn´t necessarily mean that the garments will come out cleaner. Using too much detergent is not only a waste of money, but it also can make your white clothes turn yellow.
3) Not using the washing process that corresponds to the degree and type of dirtiness. If the garments are very dirty, it´s better to wash with a higher temperature and with a longer wash cycle.
