The plague of bad smells of perspiration,
mustiness etc; remaining in the wash
even after items have been laundered and dried has given rise to the addition of almost unbearably
strong perfumes to most of the proprietary detergents, fabric conditioners,
etc. These certainly give the impression of luxury, but serve only to mask smells, not to remove them,
as anyone who has had a nasty shock when first applying the iron to a
well-loved shirt will know too well. Add four
or five drops of essential oil of lavender to the laundry powder in the
drawer, and you will find that unpleasant lingering of body odor becomes a
thing of the past. Adding borax too will
help.
A sour, musty aroma in dried laundry results from
two failing: first, taking too long
to get the wet clothes hung out; and second, drying clothes too slowly in a windless indoor environment. Both
these can be solved by good management.
