If you do not have softener at home and you need to use it for a garment made of delicate material, then replace it with one tablespoon of baking soda dissolved in the final rinse

Fabric Softeners

These are composed of cationic surfactants (Surfactants are compounds that lower the surface tension of a liquid. Surfactants may act as detergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, foaming agents, and dispersants.). They have a positive charge.

They are used in the last rinse.

They eliminate the static electricity of some fibres, especially synthetic ones (polyester, polyamide, elastane etc..)

They make towels fluffy and leave a pleasant smell.

It’s better no to use them in towels made of natural fibres, especially if the are made of linen or viscose since softeners take out the natural sizing that they posses.

My advice:

Use softeners when washing towels in the washing machine.

You can also use them when washing feather duvet quilts or cotton quilts.

Feather duvet quilts are washed using the mild program (e.g. wool program). In drying them, put a tennis ball inside the dryer with the quilt.  The tennis ball helps “separate” the feathers.  Use the mild program for drying.
